    Classical Tafsir & History

    Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari (d. 923) compiled Jami al-Bayan — one of the earliest comprehensive Quranic commentaries. He preserved the interpretations of the Prophet's companions and tabi'in, forming a foundation every later tafsir builds upon.
