Studying With Sincerity

Malik studied hard, but mostly for stickers on his chart and praise in the group chat. When he won first place in the quiz bowl, he felt a flicker of pride and then an odd emptiness, like eating too much candy.

His tutor, Brother Anwar, asked, "Who are you learning for?" Malik shrugged. "For the trophy?" Brother Anwar smiled and opened his notebook. "Try for Allah, to serve people with your knowledge." Malik had not thought of school that way.

The next week, Malik helped a classmate understand fractions after class without complaining. He studied Quran tafsir for children and found stories more exciting than any game. His heart felt fuller, even when he missed a question on the board.

At the quiz bowl the following year, Malik did well but not first. He congratulated the winner and meant it. Mama noticed and hugged him. "You look peaceful," she said.

Malik still enjoyed stars on charts, but they were not the whole sky. Sincerity, he learned, turns studying from a race into a path. Each lesson became a step toward being useful, humble, and close to Allah.
