The Bus Conductor's Reminder

Khalid slumped on the school bus, earbuds in, staring at his shoes. He had argued with his mother that morning about a forgotten permission slip and had marched out without a proper goodbye.
The conductor, Auntie Ruqayya, knelt in the aisle and said, "When you reach home, greet your mother well. You do not know how much it weighs on her heart when you rush past." Khalid pulled out one earbud, surprised.
She told him how the Prophet ﷺ taught kindness to parents. "Even a smile at the door is worship," she said. Khalid remembered his mother's tired eyes at breakfast and felt a pinch of regret.
He got off the bus still thinking. At the door he called, "Assalamu alaikum, Mama!" louder than usual. His mother dropped her spoon and laughed with relief. They fixed the slip together over tea.
The next day Khalid thanked Auntie Ruqayya with a drawing of the bus. She pinned it above her seat. Khalid learned that guidance sometimes arrives from strangers on familiar routes, reminding you to love the people already waiting at home.
