The Old Hafiz of the Village

The Old Hafiz of the Village

Everyone called him Hafiz Sahib, though he never boasted. His beard was white, his voice steady, and his shop sold buttons and thread by day. After Asr, children gathered on his rug to hear Quran roll from memory like a gentle stream.

Farid struggled with memorizing and felt embarrassed. Hafiz Sahib patted the cushion beside him. "I was older than you when I began," he said. "Allah does not rush the sincere." Farid's shoulders loosened.

Hafiz Sahib taught with stories, not scolding. He showed how ayahs fit together like patterns in a quilt. Farid learned that hifz is not only for competitions. It is friendship with Allah's words.

On Eid, the village honored Hafiz Sahib with a simple shawl and many duas. Farid recited a short surah he had mastered, voice shaking but brave. Hafiz Sahib's eyes sparkled with pride.

Farid promised to review daily, even after hard school days. He learned that the old hafiz of the village was not famous on screens, but rich where it mattered. The Quran in the chest shines longer than any medal on a wall.
