The Shopkeeper Who Refused to Cheat

Laila loved Uncle Nadeem's shop, where cinnamon and cumin colored the air like a painting. Brass scales sat on the counter, polished and serious. Uncle Nadeem never piled extra powder on top to make bags look fuller.

One afternoon a customer winked and said, "Add a little secret extra, no one will know." Uncle Nadeem smiled politely and refused. "Allah knows," he said simply. Laila watched from behind a sack of rice, impressed.

He let Laila practice weighing saffron threads on slow days. "Honest weight is trust," he taught. "Trust is harder to repair than scales." Laila repeated the words until they felt like a song.

When Laila once gave too much change by mistake, Uncle Nadeem walked with her to return it. The customer praised her honesty, and Laila blushed with pride. Uncle Nadeem nodded as if he had expected nothing less.

Years later, people still lined up at his shop. Laila understood why. Barakah, blessing, does not always look like glitter. Sometimes it looks like a shopkeeper who refuses to cheat and a child who learns to weigh truth carefully.
