The Teacher Who Listened

Mariam knew answers but let them float away like balloons when the class grew loud. Her voice was soft, and she worried it would sound silly. Ms. Laila noticed Mariam's careful notebooks filled with neat ideas.

One day after school, Ms. Laila sat beside her and said, "Tell me what you are thinking, no rush." Mariam talked about moon phases, about a verse on reflection, and about her cat's funny habits. Ms. Laila listened without interrupting.

The next morning, Ms. Laila asked Mariam to share one fact with two classmates before the whole class. Mariam's hands shook, but her friends leaned in with real interest. Her voice grew steadier, like a candle catching flame.

During presentation week, Mariam spoke about bees and the Quran. The class clapped, and Ms. Laila only smiled, not surprised. Mariam realized the teacher had planned small steps all along.

Mariam still preferred quiet corners, but she was no longer silent in them. She learned that good teaching is not only correcting. Sometimes it is listening long enough for a shy heart to believe it deserves to be heard.
