The Orchard My Grandfather Planted

The Orchard My Grandfather Planted

Yasin's grandfather planted the orchard before the road was paved, when the land was open and quiet. Now tall trees shaded picnics and Eid gatherings. Grandfather walked slowly between the rows, leaning on Yasin's arm.

He told how each sapling was watered with dua. "We planted for children we had not met yet," he said. Yasin looked at cousins chasing each other and understood. The orchard was a gift across time.

They stopped at a pomegranate tree Grandfather had nearly lost to drought. "We prayed and carried water buckets until our arms ached," he said. "Allah sent rain the next week." Yasin touched the rough bark like a page of history.

Grandfather picked fruit for neighbors who could not walk far. "Trees teach sharing," he said. Yasin helped fill a basket and delivered it to Auntie Noor, who clapped her hands in delight.

When Grandfather rested in the shade, Yasin whispered a promise to care for the orchard one day. He felt connected to roots beneath his feet and to a family story written in leaves. The best inheritances, he learned, are not counted in coins but in living things that keep giving.
